Project Overview

Infinity was designed to disrupt the pedestal fan market by creating a product that improves significantly on the traditional fan. Infinity will allow 360 degree rotation and control through the use of a smart phone app giving the user greater control and flexibility, encompassed in an elegant silhouette.

Role

UI/UX Designer, Industrial Product Designer, Project Manager

Tools

Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Inventor.

Design Objective

Create a unique smart fan accompanied by a sophisticated app.

Discovery

Understanding Product

I began by looking at the current fan and smart fan market; this included Dysons bladeless fan and a few variants of the pedestal fan.

Insights

Learnings From Product

After completing the market research it was clear there were a few problems with the current model.

Non-intuitive app

The Dyson bladeless fan had an app  which was not easy to understand or use.

Limited Range of Motion

There was no fan that we found that could give the user a full 360 degree rotaion and the flexibility to choose the angle that the fan will turn through.

Groundwork

Personality

Sophisticated. Formal. Elegant.

With this product we wanted to evoke a feeling of sophistication and power.

Colours

We created a pallette based on whites, blues, vibrant, and pastel colours.

Solution

The overall flow directs the user from integrating the product into the app, calibrating the direction, and then to the main control page.

Position and Rotation

After calibrating the app to the Infinity you can control both the position and range of oscillation through the control page. The design is intuitive.

Blade Speed and Rotation Speed

To change the speed I decided to create the fan face with spinning blades which reflect the speed that the user is on, and for the rotation speed, a top view of thet Infinity fan is taken to see the speed and range of rotation.

Themes

To allow the user the ability to save certain settings depending on the temperature and room that the fan is in, I created a themes page which allows the user to set the; speed of blades, rotation angle, and speed of rotation.

Testing and Feedback

We tested both the app and the product designs at every step in the creative process and received very positive feedback througout. Adobe XD prototypes were created and shared with a control group and surveys were taken to continuously update the design. A wireframe can be tested here.

Key Project Lesson

Collaboration is Cool.

Through the hardware development of this project we were working with project engineering companies in China which meant we needed robust communication channels so that we could communicate around the clock.
